Case Closed, known as Meitantei Conan (名探偵コナン?, lit. Great Detective Conan, officially translated as Detective Conan) in Japan, is a Japanese detective manga series written and illustrated by Gosho Aoyama. The series is serialized in Shogakukan's Weekly Shōnen Sunday since February 2, 1994, and has been collected in 73 tankōbon volumes as of September 2011. Due to legal considerations with the name Detective Conan, the English language release was renamed Case Closed.[1] The story follows the adventures of Jimmy Kudo, a prodigious young detective who was inadvertently transformed into a child after being poisoned.

Since its publication, Case Closed has spawned a substantial media franchise. The manga has been adapted into an ongoing animated television series by Yomiuri Telecasting Corporation and TMS Entertainment; the animated series has reached its twentieth season. The series has spawned three original video animation series, fifteen animated feature films, three live action dramas, one live action series, numerous video games, and many types of Case Closed-related merchandise. A two-hour television special titled Lupin the 3rd vs Detective Conan was aired on March 27, 2009, and featured a crossover with the series Lupin III.

Funimation Entertainment licensed the anime series for North American broadcast in 2003 under the name Case Closed with the characters given Americanized names. The anime premiered on Cartoon Network as part of their Adult Swim programming block and was discontinued due to low ratings. The first six films were released on Region 1 DVD in North America. Viz Media later licensed the manga series for English-language publication in North America and used Funimation's renamed title and cast. As of July 2011, 39 volumes have been published by Viz Media.

Compilation volumes of the manga have sold more than 120 million copies in Japan. In 2001, the manga was awarded 46th Shogakukan Manga Award in the shōnen category. The anime adaptation has been well received and ranked in the top twenty in Animage's polls between 1996 and 2001. In the Japanese TV anime ranking, Case Closed often ranked in the top six. Both manga and anime have had positive response from critics for its plot and cases.

Plot

Jimmy Kudo is a 17-year-old high school prodigy who frequently helps the police to solve cases. During an investigation, he is attacked by two criminals, codenamed Gin and Vodka, from the syndicate called the Black Organization. They force him to ingest an experimental poison, APTX 4869, which is supposed to kill him, and leave him to die. A rare side-effect of the poison, however, transforms Kudo's body into that of a child instead of killing him.

Adopting the pseudonym Conan Edogawa, Kudo hides his identity to investigate the Black Organization. He intends to pretend to be a child until he can find enough evidence to apprehend the syndicate, after which he can then safely find and administer a cure for his current condition. Edogawa enrolls at Teitan elementary school and forms the Junior Detective League with three other children in his class: Amy Yoshida, Mitch Tsuburaya, and George Kojima. To further cover up his activities, he moves in with his childhood friend Rachel Moore, whose father, Richard, works as a private investigator. Kudo continues to solve criminal cases as Conan, but usually poses as Richard Moore with the help of special gadgets invented by his neighbor and friend, Hiroshi Agasa.

Shiho Miyano, a member of the Black Organization and creator of APTX 4869, tries to leave the syndicate after her sister's murder, but is held captive by them. She attempts to commit suicide by ingesting APTX 4869; however, like Kudo, she is transformed into a child. She manages to escape and enrolls in Conan's school under the pseudonym, Anita Hailey. She joins the Junior Detective League and assists Conan in his investigations on the Black Organization. Conan's quest has led him to help the FBI to plant a CIA agent, Kir, inside the Black Organization as an undercover spy.

In 2007, Aoyama hinted he had the ending planned out but he has no intention of ending the series yet.

After the festival three years ago. The warehouse caught fire and a body was discovered. The police concluded that it might be a tourist who was looking for an extra arrow to steal, but accidentally set the warehouse on fire.

Scenario: Conan and Heiji investigate Naoko's brutal murder and discover a trail of fish scales that suggest Naoko's killer came from the sea. The area and history of the Mermaid's Grave which was supposedly a grave of a mermaid that was moved to a forest on mermaid island after grave robbers tried to steal its bones for immortality. They learn that Mikoto is over 130 years old, an arrow carrier, and the head of the festival. While investigating the murders, Kimie is burned alive in the warehouse near the shrine. Conan, after a few more hints and clues, reveals to Heiji over the phone that he knows who the murderer is and to meet him later. However, as Heiji discovers the mermaid's grave in the forest, he falls off the cliff and Kazuha, while successfully pulling him back up, ends up falling off the cliff herself. Heiji jumps off the cliff after her and they both end up hanging from a tree branch. Kazuha sees the branch slowly breaking from the weight of both of them and stabs Heiji's hand with her arrow in order to make him let go and save himself.

During Toshimi's funeral, Naoko was found murdered by someone at the fishing net. The foot prints of the criminal went toward the ocean and vanished, and her arrow is missing. Is Naoko murdered by the mermaid!?

Conan and Heiji investigate the area and history of Mermaids Grave, a forest on mermaid island. They learn that an elder who is over 130 years old is a holder of the arrow and the head of the festival. Three years ago a warehouse got burned down and a half body was discovered missing its legs. The police from the coast said that the body was of a middle age woman, and concluded that it might have been a tourist, who snuck into the warehouse to look for a dugong arrow and accidently started the fire. The deceased was never identified. But rumors had been going around that it was a body of a mermaid. The year after the incident, the bones were buried on the island, but later moved into the forest on orders from the Elder due to grave robbers who had stolen bones from the grave. In myth it was believed that bones of a mermaid grant long life. It was that incident that made the Elder famous around the country. Naoko suggest that Toshimi had been looking for the grave, and Kimie confirms that Toshimi often spoke of it.

Not long after Ran and Kazuha saw a strange woman resemble Saori, the warehouse was set on fire. The burnt body was identified as Kimie. From circumstances, everything pointed to Saori being the true mastermind of the three murders. Was she really the woman Ran and Kazuha saw? Or it's the other two suspects, her father and Rokuro?

While investigating two more murders occur. First Naoko being strangled and her arrow is missing. The only connection between the three women, beside being childhood friends, is that they all three believed in the power of the arrow, and that the Elder was immortal. Heiji and Conan decides to take a look at the book with the names and numbers for those who anticipated in the festival's lottery, but the most recent one is missing. While Kimie goes out to search for it. Heiji and Conan takes a look at the old ones. Conan finds a name, Shiho Miyano, and remembers that it was Haibara's real name, but doubts that's her. Then Kimie gets burned in the warehouse near the shrine. After the corpse's identity is determent by dental records, Rokuro breaks down crying and the 'Elder' takes to her bed muttering about seeing young life dying, while she still lives. The group splits up, Heiji and Kazuha goes out searching for Benzo, while Rokuro takes the rest to Saori's house, so Ran can see a picture of Saori and determent if she was the woman, she and Kazuha saw. After searching a bag for travel in the house Conan realizes that something is missing. He reveals to Heiji he knows who the murderer is, relay his theory, and asks him to meet up later, but later Heiji and Kazuha fall off a cliff after they discovered the much-talked-about grave. At the grave Heiji sees that someone has visited it recently and begins to wonder if Conan's solution was correct.
